The relative complexity of Catalan vowels and their perceptual correlates

چکیده

Different phonological analyses of front-mid vowels can be seen to agree on one point: =G? is more complex than ='?. Support for the validity of this claim is potentially available from perceptual and acquisitional studies. The vowels of Catalan are described, and procedures detailed which identify formant values for Catalan front-mid vowels. Empirical tests using native speakers and English controls reveal prototypes for these vowels in vocalic space. No link between perception and complexity is observed, but the findings augur well for future work in acquisition.

Acoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels

This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...

Stress and Accent in Catalan and Spanish: Patterns of duration, vowel quality, overall intensity, and spectral balance*

This article is concerned with the acoustic correlates that characterize stress and accent in Catalan and Spanish. We analyzed four acoustic correlates of stress (syllable duration, vowel quality, overall intensity, and spectral balance) in four conditions, namely, stressed and unstressed syllables in both accented and unaccented environments. This allowed us to examine the relative strength of...

Acoustic correlates of stress in central Catalan and Castilian Spanish.

The general literature on the phonetic correlates of stress agrees that duration, and in stress accent languages, F0 are consistent correlates of stress. However, the role of amplitude changes in the speech signal is more controversial. In particular, the conflicting results of spectral tilt as a correlate of stress have been attributed to the effects of vowel reduction. We examined the stress ...

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners

This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...

بررسی ساختار سازه‌ای واکه‌های زبان فارسی در بزرگ‌سالان دوزبانه آذری فارسی

Objective: Vowels are the center of syllables while formant structures are one of the most important acoustic characteristics of speech sounds that help in their articulatory and perceptual aspects. Formants represent the shape and size of the vocal tract. There exist trivial differences between the vocal tracts of different people due to which the formant structures of a vowel in one person ar...
